Winter 2012 Magazine

Flo is 54-years-old. She was a research chimp subjected to decades of painful procedures and psychological suffering. Flo was used for breeding. She gave birth to four infants only to have them removed from her within days. She was shot with anesthetic at least 110 times and suffered seizures. She was exposed to viruses and street drugs. Flo chronically lost weight, and attempted escape multiple times. Chimps have memories and emotions similar to humans. To force this elderly, ill chimp into another testing program would be incredibly cruel.

Yet that is what the National Institutes of Health (NIH) wants to do. NIH still supports moving all of the surviving government-owned chimpanzees from the safety of their home in New Mexico to an invasive research lab in Texas. If they succeed, New Mexico will lose all the surviving chimps at the Alamogordo Primate Facility - almost 200 of them. Dozens of jobs and at least $25 million over the next ten years will also leave the state.

The United States is the ONLY developed nation still using chimps in invasive studies. It is time the practice stopped.

You can help the chimps by:

Calling Congress today in support of the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act (S. 810/H.R. 1513). If you've called before, call again. The calls take about five minutes, but could make a world of difference for the chimpanzees who have suffered long and difficult years in labs.

When you call:

  • Ask your Senator or Representative to please co-sponsor the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act (S. 810/H.R 1513).
  • Remind them how much chimpanzees have suffered physically and psychologically in laboratories and that it is unethical to continue to use them in research.
  • Americans will save $300 million tax dollars over ten years when this bill passes

The chimps are counting on you. Make this your holiday gift to them.
