New Admission Policy at
Animal Humane | New Mexico

A new admission policy was started on March 15, 2013 that is intended to save more lives at the shelter. Admissions will now be made by appointment. You will not be able to just bring an animal in at any time. This process is termed Managed Admissions or Pet Admissions by Appointment.

The purpose of this new policy is to improve the quality of life for pets at Animal Humane, to shorten the length of their stay, increase adoptions and further reduce the already low euthanasia rates.

After AHANM learned that this program has worked for other shelters across the country, it was decided to start a pilot program at AHANM for Admissions by Appointment.

It is believed that using this system Animal Humane will be able to gather better information on each pet to ensure the best placement possible. They also will be able to provide owners with behavioral or re-homing resources so their pets never have to enter the shelter thereby promoting responsible pet ownership.

Another advantage of this program is that by knowing the number of pets coming in each day, they can increase the number of pets they transfer in from other places in New Mexico.
