Animal Briefs

If you lose an animal in the Santa Fe area, alert these groups to let people know. It might increase your chances of having your animal returned safe and sound. www.sflostpets.org has a website devoted to lost animals. You can post a picture of your animal with a description and where the animal was lost or last seen. They also have listings with "found" animals who are looking for their people.

Another avenue is to email the Lost Dog Alert List. Write an email to lostdogalert@msn.com specifying everything you know about your animal's disappearance. Emails will be sent to everyone on the list asking them to watch for your animal. Losing your animal is a horrible experience and these sites will help you know you are doing all you can to find your animal friend.

ABQ PetCare wants to increase awareness of the importance of pet dental health by letting you show off your pet's smile in the "Perfect Pet Smile" contest Good pet dental care is perhaps the single most important thing you can do to add years and quality to your pet's life and smile. To promote just how important pet dental health is ABQ PetCare has launched the "Perfect Pet Smile" Contest to give 12 lucky pets the chance to show off their perfect pet smile and compete for a prize package. The prize package includes a basket of healthy pet treats, a pet oral exam, a featured spot in the 2012 SMILE calendar, a trophy presented at an awards program to be held in conjunction with Pet Dental Care Month in February 2012, a featured place in a print ad showcasing all the winning smiles and much more.

The ABQ PetCare "Perfect Pet Smile" Contest is open to all pet owners and all pet types (you need not be a dog to win) in the Greater Albuquerque Region. Pet owners interested in submitting their pet for consideration are being asked to submit a picture of their pet smiling (or their version of a smile) through ABQ PetCare's Facebook Fan page. Further information is available online at www.abqpetcarehospital.com or www.facebook.com/ABQPetCare. The contest begins October 15, with entries accepted until December 15.

A group called Interfaith Alliance for Animals wants to create a bigger voice for animals and a greater arena for humane education. They want you to help animals in New Mexico by raising awareness and sharing advocacy for animals in your own faith-based community. The next meeting of the Interfaith Alliance for Animals will be Sunday, October 23, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the Social Hall, First Unitarian Church at Comanche and Carlisle NE in Albuquerque. For more information on the group, contact Mikki Aronoff at ochoyluna@yahoo.com.

NEW ANIMAL WEBSITE: www.adoptashelter.com
The people behind Sticky Paws, and others in the pet industry, want to help fundraise for animal shelters. They have come up with a wonderful way for you to donate to your favorite animal shelter by shopping for things you need anyway.

Adoptashelter.com donates 100% of the amount displayed to the shelter or animal organization of your choice. Each store's site tells you the amount of the donation. There is no sign-up or password for you to remember and they don't collect any of your information. Once you are logged into the Adoptashelter.com site, choose the shelter or organization you want your donation to go to and then begin shopping at any of the 400+ stores listed. These are stores you shop at anyway, such as amazon.com, Wal-Mart, Lowes, 1-800-Flowers, Office Depot and many others. The shelter gets the donation, the site gets a small percentage and the shelter gets a check. If you don't see the shelter or organization you want to give to, you can add it. They will check to make sure it is a legitimate group and then you will be able to donate to them. Be sure to add the shelters in your community. When I looked, there were no listings for New Mexico yet so we need to get going and help the shelters, animal organizations and rescue groups here.

Does your cat or dog have a name like Cleo or Bailey? Or do you like unusual names that reflect an animal's personality? VPI Pet Insurance went through their database of more than 470,000 insured pets to come up with some of the most unusual names they could find. You'll find the top 10 names here. View the rest of the names they picked as the "Top 50 Wackiest Names". See if you agree with their choices. You will also find sections that explain why people picked these names for their animals.
