Looking back at PETroglyphs’ history makes me realize how much our volunteer team has accomplished during our 10 years of publication. I have been privileged to work with PETroglyphs from the beginning. I’ve watched this publication go through many changes and grow into a nationally known and acclaimed publication. Many of the names on the masthead have changed, but our mission has remained the same.

PETroglyphs is an independent, award-winning animal publication focused on community education for animal welfare in New Mexico. We want to be the first place people look to find animal information.

Copies of PETroglyphs have always been distributed free of charge to New Mexicans in the belief that we could reach more people who needed animal information with a free publication than if we limited distribution to paying subscribers. We have relied on advertisers and donations from our readers to keep PETroglyphs publishing. At various times we have received limited grants to help us with our costs.


1995-1996 – New Mexico Pet News

This publication, the precursor of PETroglyphs, was started as a “nonprofit independent newspaper published bi-monthly for the community to provide information, resources and educational articles to pet owners which will help them care for their pets.” This publication only lasted for three issues.

Fall 1996

PETroglyphs began in “…hopes of providing a fun and interesting resource for people who can’t imagine a world without a diversity of other animal species. Our focus is primarily those affectionately known as pets.” This quarterly publication, which contained 12 pages, was distributed in Santa Fe and Albuquerque.


PETroglyphs combined forces with Heart and Soul Animal Sanctuary to publish the Winter 1997/98 issue. With this issue PETroglyphs grew to 16 pages.


Officially incorporated as a New Mexico nonprofit corporation. All donations became tax-deductible. We began publishing an “Animal Resource Directory” in each issue to help readers locate organizations involved in the rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of animals.


“Kid Stuff” was added. This two-page center spread in each issue has continued. We saw this as part of our commitment to humane education.


The PETroglyphs website ( officially opened. We have continued to build on this, and now we receive thousands of visitors each month. One of the most popular features of the website is the “Animal Resource Directory,” an up-to-date listing of animal organizations throughout the state. We removed this section from the print edition because of space concerns. Having this on the website makes it available with current information and it is downloadable.


In a leap of faith PETroglyphs expanded to 24 pages per issue, where we have remained. We incorporated the three-page newsletter from No More Homeless Pets of New Mexico (NMHPNM) into each PETroglyphs edition. NMHPNM’s work, “advocating and facilitating the spaying and neutering of pets,” fit into our mission. During this time our distribution throughout the state was increasing. We published 10,500 copies of each issue and were distributed in 23 cities.


The “Behavior Q & A” column was added to showcase common animal behavior issues. The column is featured on an as- needed basis.


PETroglyphs won the 2002 Milagro Media Award from Animal Protection of New Mexico for “courage, creativity, and integrity in reporting on animal issues.”


We added “The Rights View,” an opinion column dealing with animal rights issues. “The PetroAnimal Calendar” also made its debut. This feature covers three months and lists national, animal-related or animal-themed special days.


PETroglyphs won the “Journalist of the Year Award” from New Mexico Week for the Animals. It was given for “…the journalistic effort that brings animal issues to the forefront through print, television or radio reporting and engenders increased public awareness essential to creating a brighter future for animals.”


Cat Writers’ Association Muse Medallion was given to PETroglyphs as the best Regional Publication. “Cat Chat” won the Muse Medallion for Best Newspaper Column.


“Kid Stuff” went bilingual. One page is printed in English, the other in Spanish.


PETroglyphs announced its first annual “You Oughta Be in Pictures” Photo Contest. The winning picture, selected from many entries, graced the cover of the Fall issue.


PETroglyphs and “Cat Chat” each won Muse Medallions again in 2005.


“Casa Canine” joined the line-up as a column of information and issues for and about dogs and their families.


PETroglyphs now prints 12,500 copies and is distributed in 54 cities.



Governor Richardson proclaimed September 15, 2006 as PETroglyphs Day in New Mexico to honor our 10 years of publication and the contributions PETroglyphs has made toward raising awareness of New Mexico’s animals and the issues that face them.

The PETroglyphs’ staff looks at this first 10 years as prelude to continued achievements in our service to animals. We are devoting more space to current animal issues such as dangerous dog or breed-specific legislation, the link between domestic violence and animal and child abuse, and the aftermath of Katrina’s animal disaster and what that means for the future. But we will not forget the local animal issues, like cockfighting, humane animal laws throughout the state, the massive pet overpopulation problem in New Mexico or legislative measures faced by the State legislature.

More reader-friendly changes are planned, including expansion of the website and the printing of a handy, pull-out, reference section in each issue of PETroglyphs listing New Mexico businesses and services that cater to the needs of companion animals and their people.
